A FAMILY OPERATION
Nick and Beth Wingate Live on the Farm in Waynesboro, Georgia with their 13 children. After serving 6 years in the Marine Corps, including 2 tours in Iraq, Nick and his family moved to Georgia! This is where they would begin working toward their dream of owning land and raising beef.
They invested every last dollar into converting the massive Georgia peanut fields into grass. After the first dry spring, and many prayers for rain, hay fields and pastures took shape as the carefully selected Bermuda Hybrid grew verdant. The same painstaking considerations went into choosing the first cows that set foot on the farm. Nick always held to his ideal that to have a good herd of cows, it has to be grown from good heifers and even better bulls. What started with a few cows, has grown into a sizable herd with more than a few noteworthy bulls from reputable breeders.
Most importantly, however, Nick and Beth have kept Southern Winds Cattle Company a family operation from start to finish. The Children all have a part in it - every fence, hay bale, and critter is put up and cared for by one or more of the family. Not only do Nick and Beth have a passion for farming and the beef that is raised on their farm, but they have also always believed that the farm is the only place they want to raise their children. The kind of values they have tried to instill in their children are hard to find in today's society.
As Nick says, “When your teenage children have a big part in the decisions made on the land and don’t care about having a social media page, it makes all the sacrifices of this lifelong operation worth it.” From the girls putting up fences, to the younger boys managing the feeding and calving, the young people in this family don’t have time to waste on television or devices. “They are all in!” Beth laughs, “there is no fight about what they can or can't do, they believe in this farm and make it work just as much as we do!”
